Easy Basil Pesto Without Pine Nuts

There’s something so satisfying about making your own pesto at home. Fresh basil, garlic, Parmesan, good olive oil, and a handful of nuts come together to make a sauce that tastes so much brighter and fresher than anything from a jar.

What if you open your pantry and realize you have no pine nuts? No problem!

Traditional pesto is usually made with pine nuts, but they aren’t essential for a delicious homemade pesto. Walnuts are my favorite substitute because they’re affordable, easy to find, and give the pesto a lovely creamy texture and slightly nutty flavor.

This easy pine nut-free pesto recipe takes just a few minutes to make and requires no cooking. Simply blend everything together, adjust the seasoning, and you have a vibrant homemade sauce ready for pasta, sandwiches, pizza, chicken, vegetables, or even a slice of crusty bread.

The best part? Once you make a batch, you’ll start finding excuses to put pesto on absolutely everything!

Nut Substitutions

Don’t have walnuts either? You can use:

  • Almonds – slightly sweeter and more crunchy
  • Cashews – makes the pesto extra creamy
  • Sunflower seeds – great nut-free option
  • Pumpkin seeds – earthy and delicious

How to Use Homemade Pesto

This pesto is incredibly versatile. Try it with:

  • Pasta
  • Chicken
  • Grilled vegetables
  • Sandwiches and wraps
  • Pizza
  • Bruschetta
  • Eggs
  • Roasted potatoes
  • Salads
  • Grilled fish
  • Soups
  • Toasted bread

For an easy weeknight dinner, toss the pesto with hot pasta and a splash of reserved pasta water. Add grilled chicken, cherry tomatoes, or mozzarella for a complete meal.

⭐ My Favorite Pesto Pasta Trick

Don’t simply mix pesto with dry pasta.

Cook your pasta and reserve about ½ cup of pasta water before draining. Toss the hot pasta with pesto and gradually add a little pasta water.

The starchy water helps loosen the pesto and creates a silky sauce that coats every strand of pasta.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups fresh basil leaves, packed
  • ½ cup walnuts
  • ½ cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2–3 cloves garlic
  • ½ cup extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • ½ teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • ¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1–2 tablespoons water, if needed

Instructions

Prepare the basil

  1. Wash the fresh basil leaves and dry them really well. Excess water can make your pesto watery and dilute the flavor.
  2. Remove any thick stems, although small tender stems are perfectly fine.

Toast the walnuts

  1. For an extra layer of flavor, lightly toast the walnuts in a dry skillet over medium-low heat for about 3–4 minutes, stirring frequently.
  2. Let them cool completely before blending.
  3. Tip: Toasting is optional, but it makes a noticeable difference in the flavor.

Blend the ingredients

  1. Add the basil, walnuts, garlic, Parmesan, lemon juice, salt, and black pepper to a food processor.
  2. Pulse several times until everything is roughly chopped.

Add the olive oil

  1. With the food processor running on low, slowly drizzle in the olive oil.
  2. Continue blending until the pesto reaches your preferred consistency.
  3. I like mine slightly textured rather than completely smooth because you can really taste the basil and walnuts that way.

Adjust the consistency

  1. If the pesto is too thick, add 1 tablespoon of water at a time until you reach the consistency you like.
  2. Taste and adjust the salt, Parmesan, lemon juice, or garlic as needed.
  3. And that’s it…. your homemade pesto is ready!

How to Store Pesto

  1. Transfer the pesto to a clean airtight jar or container and refrigerate.
  2. To help prevent the basil from oxidizing and turning brown, smooth the surface and drizzle a thin layer of olive oil over the top before sealing.
