Looking for a simple, juicy, and halal chicken dumplings recipe that your kids will actually enjoy? These homemade chicken dumplings (momos style) are soft, flavorful, and perfect for busy moms, lunchboxes, or quick weeknight dinners.

Dumplings may look simple, just dough with filling, but they are actually one of the oldest and most universal foods in the world. Almost every country has its own version, its own shape, and its own flavour! Here’s a breakdown of how different countries created their own special dumplings:
🇨🇳China – Momos (or Jiaozi)
China is considered the motherland of dumplings.
Their dumplings are called Jiaozi, but in many Asian regions, including Tibet and Nepal, the steamed ones are famous as Momos.
What makes them special:
- Thin dough
- Juicy filling
- Usually steamed, but can be fried
- Served with spicy chili chutney
- Super popular among kids and adults
Chinese dumplings were originally made during winter for good luck and now they’ve become a global favorite.
🇯🇵Japan – Gyoza
Japan’s dumplings, called Gyoza, were inspired by Chinese Jiaozi but got a Japanese twist.
What’s different:
- Thinner wrapper than Chinese dumplings
- Pan-fried at the bottom (crispy!) then steamed
- Garlic flavour is stronger
- Served with tangy soy-vinegar dip
They’re crispy from the outside and soft inside like a dumpling with attitude!
🇹🇷Turkey – Manti
Turkey has a legendary dumpling called Manti, and they are very different from Asian dumplings.
Why they’re special:
- Very tiny some are the size of chickpeas!
- Usually boiled
- Served with garlic yogurt and chili butter
- A mixture of savoury and creamy flavours
In Turkish culture, Manti is so special that serving perfectly tiny dumplings was once considered a sign of a skilled chef (or a super-talented bride!).
🇳🇵Nepal – Spicy Momos
Nepal’s momos look similar to Chinese dumplings, but they have a bolder, spicier flavour.
What’s unique:
- Filling includes spices like chili, coriander, ginger
- Often served with fiery tomato & sesame chutney
- Sometimes filled with chicken, veggies, or cheese
- Shaped like sun-rays or little flowers
Nepali momos are loved because they’re warm, comforting, and full of flavour — perfect for cold mountain weather.
