Chaat masala is a popular spice blend commonly used in South Asian cuisine, particularly in Indian and Pakistani dishes. It’s a tangy, salty, and slightly spicy mix of spices that adds a burst of flavor to snacks, salads, fruits, and street foods like chaat, hence the name.
Common Ingredients in Chaat Masala
Dried mango powder (amchur): Adds tanginess
Black salt (kala namak): Gives a sulfurous, salty flavor
Cumin (zeera): Provides earthiness
Coriander seeds: Adds a warm, nutty flavor
Ginger powder: Gives mild warmth
Black pepper: Adds spiciness
Whole Chili : For heat.
Chat masala is often sprinkled on dishes like:
- Chaat (spiced snacks)
- Dahi puri or pani puri
- Fruit Salad (like mango, watermelon, or oranges)
- Yogurt ( Raita)
- Boiled potatoes
- Popcorn
Its versatility makes it a pantry staple for anyone who enjoys bold, tangy flavors. I also add tartaric acid (tatri) to make it extra tangy, you can replace it with extra 1 tsp of dried mango powder
There are so many different ways to make it. Let’s see how I like my homemade chaat masala.
